Stop wishing and start reprogramming

24/01/2010

“In order to change you must be sick and tired of being sick and tired”

Over the years I’ve read thousands of books and attended countless seminars on subjects such as goal setting, success, achievement, happiness…you mention it, I have done it!

I learnt a lot. I mean, I memorised the stuff, but never really put it into practice.

I used to wonder why after so many hours studying, so much knowledge, I wasn’t making things happen in my life.

The truth was, I was not able to achieve anything because back then I thought I wasn’t an “achiever”. I thought certain people are the type of people who accomplish a lot in life, and that I was not that type of person.

To support that belief,  all I was really doing was daydream  now and again about certain things I thought would be nice to have in my life. But I wasn’t doing anything to get those things.

And as my dear mum says: dreaming nice things is great, but only while your asleep.

While awake, you must do more than daydream.

The thing is, deep inside, I used to think that the things I wanted were unattainable for me. That they were ok for other people to have, but that they weren’t really for me.

Part of the excuse why I didn’t take action was my childhood programming. Part of it was pure laziness. I was too comfortable for my own good.

I had learnt that your beliefs about yourself and the world determine your behaviour, and consequently the results you get in life.

But I didn’t really know what this really meant, or how it applied to me.

I didn’t even know that limiting beliefs can be shed, just like snake skin, and that you can adopt new more useful ones, that will allow you to move forward swiftly, and live the life you really want to live.

It was only when I discovered nlp and hypnosis that I learnt how you can do this really quickly.

From personal experience, and from coaching clients, I now know that in order to speed up this process, it helps that  you are really fed up. That you have  just had enough of your present situation. And that change is the only way forward for you.

You have to want something so badly, that the thought of not having it doesn’t even cross your mind.  And if it ever does, it totally and utterly repulses you to the point that you will do anything, whatever it takes, to get what you want.

Think about this for a second…

Most people who seem to naturally lead a healthy lifestyle will tell you things like: ”It’s part of who I am”, “I couldn’t live any other way”, or “There’s no way I’d ever eat that/do that”

This is because when you have made the decision that this is the type of person you really are, you get so much pleasure out of everything it involves, that the thought of not being healthy is just unfathomable.

This is the way I think now. Things that in the past used to be a chore, are now an intrinsic part of my everyday life.

I do them naturally and almost unconsciously, because I reprogrammed my mind so I could be the person I wanted to be.

Making decisions around food are not a struggle, but very quickly and easily made.

I don’t force myself to exercise. I look forward to it.

I am not a slave to the scales. And I don’t waste any time and energy feeling guilty, bad, or focusing on what I don’t like about myself, or what I don’t want.

Because that is not how a truly healthy and fit person behaves.

If you too want to make some big lasting changes, then you have to stop wishing, hoping, daydreaming you were slimmer, healthier, fitter…

You have to believe you already are those things with every single cell in your body, from the very core of your being.

Believe in your mind, and your body will follow.

It’s not about forcing yourself to believe though. It’s about reprogramming your mind so you can become the person you want to be.

Do this and you’ll be  supersonically accelerating the process of looking the way you want to look, and feeling the way you want to feel.

If you want to achieve your goals this year you need to STOP DOING THIS

04/01/2010

If you are making resolutions and you are thinking about all the things you want to stop doing, like…

I have to stop drinking so much, I must give up chocolate, I should stop smoking, I shouldn’t spend that much money, I need to lose weight

Then stop, because it is not going to work for you.

You may have heard the saying “whatever you focus on you get more of”.

This means that if you focus on what you don’t want, you’ll get more of what you don’t want.

So, if for example,  you want to lose weight, and you are thinking things like:

I hate the way I look, I feel so heavy, I look horrible, I have huge thighs, my tummy looks disgusting…

Then you are probably also thinking:

That’s it, I can’t have bread any more, I am not allowed to eat chocolate, I shouldn’t eat pasta, I have to stop eating take aways, no more cake for me…

Then you have to realise that all you are doing is making it even harder for yourself, because you are focusing on all the stuff you don’t want.

If you are spending all your time thinking about all the things you don’t want, can’t have and shouldn’t do, then when are you thinking about what you do want?

Before you can make any changes in your life, you must change your mindset. You must change the way you think.

Otherwise, no matter how much you wish for something, how much you hope it happens, you will not get it.

Your mind doesn not recognize all the don’ts, shouldn’ts, can’ts… you are thinking.

It only recognizes positive commands.

So, when you say things like “I can’t have chocolate”, your mind processes “have chocolate”.

When you say “Don’t eat those fries”, your mind recognizes “eat those fries”.

And then you try and fight that command with will power alone? Pretty much impossible.

Unless you stop focusing on what you don’t want, you are wasting your time and setting yourself up for disappointment.

You must stop cluttering your mind thinking and talking about what you don’t want.

Shopping for after Christmas sales? The best buy ever starts with Y…

26/12/2009

We got lots of useful beliefs, and tons of inspiration and motivation!

Too late, too old, not ready yet, not clever enough, too dear, too hard… what is your excuse for not setting out to get what you want in the new year?

Your ability to turn excuses into more useful beliefs will determine your success in 2010.

When you start to think more usefully, things will start to change for you.

When you think about the goals you want to achieve, you will feel differently about them. They will simply seem more doable.

Whatever it is that you want, whether you want a more successful career, better relationships, more money, love, a healthier and fitter body

You can have it when you get yourself in the right mindset, identify the skills you need to make it happen, and take consistent and focused action.

How can you do this? Well, here how you can get started…

Take a couple of minutes to write down all the negative things you usually tell yourself that have been keeping you from taking action in a particular area. Then turn this into more useful  beliefs.

For example: Getting a new job

Negative beliefs Useful  beliefs
– I am not good enough at public speaking

–  I am not a good sales person

–  I am not qualified enough for the job

–  I am not confident enough for the interview

– I can become better at public speaking by…

–  I can become a better sales person by…

– I can be more qualified for the job by…

– I can be more confident at the interview by…

The endings you choose for your “useful beliefs” statements, will give you an idea of the  skills you need to get better at.

Your objectives will seem more real and achievable once you have identified what  it is that you need to improve.

This is why the best investment you will make this year is in improving Yourself; getting the necessary skills  for you to achieve your goals more quickly and effortlessly.

Nothing will ever be as rewarding, long-lasting and good value for money. Talk about bargains!

One of my clients  was made redundant from her job this year and came to me for help.

We discussed a number of ideas, all of which she turned down. She said she was too old to start over. She is in her early sixties.

So we googled away, and this is a shortened list of what we found out:

  • Verdi composed his Ave Maria at age 85.
  • Harlan Sanders started Kentucky Fried Chicken at 65.
  • Ronald Reagan didn’t get into politics until he was 55.
  • Laura Ingalls Wilder (author of Little House on the Prairie) published her first book in her 60s.
  • Rodney Dangerfield didn’t start doing comedy until he was 45.
  • Cezanne’s most highly prized paintings were done in his 60s.
  • Alfred Hitchcock’s best films, including Vertigo and Psycho, were done in his late 50s and early 60s.

Not only was she shocked, but she was also deeply inspired.

After this, we worked together on turning her excuses into reasons why she wanted to start over doing something she loved.

Then we identified the skills she needed to acquire in order to do this, and we put together an action plan that worked for her.

She took action straight away, and to this day she emails me telling me how she feels happier and more accomplished than ever.

See, when it comes to personal accomplishment, as George Washington once said, ninety-nine per cent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.

So, remember, if you have things you want to achieve in the new year, quit making excuses and avail of the best special offer ever: The opportunity to improve yourself and the quality of your life.

Want success? Then you need to fail more

20/12/2009

Last week I  attended a webinar given by legendary  personal and professional development speaker Brian Tracy.

As he spoke from the States, his webinar started at 11pm Irish time and, even though it went on for an hour an a half and I had to get up early the following day, there is no way I was going to miss it!

When Brian speaks you have no choice but to listen and trust his words implicitly.

Brian has helped thousands of people around the world achieve personal and professional success.

He spoke about his own journey, and about how if you want to be successful in life, whatever success means for you, you need to get more comfortable with failure.

He said successful people make more mistakes than less successful people because they take more risks. And taking more risks involves more chances for failure.

These people are not different to you or me, they simply refuse to focus on things that make them feel fearful.

They shift their focus to everything around them that is going well, and everything that can go well.

Fear of failure paralyzes people and they start to think things like “I Can’t” or “I won’t be able to”, which is a lifetime recipe for failure.

But as you know, when you work out, you get stronger. When you learn new things, you get smarter.

And  when you make mistakes, you get more successful. All you have to do is learn from your mistakes and try a new approach.

If you fall, make sure you fall forward, so when you get up you are closer to your goal.

Brian’s recipe for success?

Get started, and never ever quit!

Find out how you too can learn to re-program your mind for success. Vanish fears in an instant, and start to think like a successful person!

Have resolutions for 2010? Why you won’t stick to them unless you do this

14/12/2009

By definition, a resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit.

Resolutions are often linked to a lifestyle change that is interpreted as beneficial. These commitments tend to go into effect on new year’s day and remain until fulfilled, or abandoned.

Some of the most popular ones include:

Losing weight, getting fit, eating right, quitting smoking, reducing stress, getting organised, getting out of debt

However, recent studies show that only 12% of people who set new year’s resolutions actually go on to achieve their goals.

– How come, year after year, millions of people all over the world swear over and over again they will stick to their resolutions,  only to give them up, as most people do, a few weeks later?

– How can people abandon such important and beneficial goals they have set for themselves, so easily and quickly?

The answer is simple. The haven’t mastered the art of setting well formed outcomes.

Most people don’t know how to set goals. They like to daydream about what their lives would be like if things were different, they like to think about and talk to other people about ideas, things they would like to do, things they should do…

These are not goals. They are just thoughts. In order for you to achieve your goals, you need to take consistent and focused action. And unless you follow the steps I am going to reveal now, you may find it extremely hard.

If you are serious about sticking to your resolutions this year, make sure you follow these goal setting strategies:

1/ A well formed outcome needs to reflect your values. Your values are your beliefs about what is most important to you in life. These provide inspiration, govern your levels of motivation, and guide every decision you make. They are the standards you live by.

If, for example, health and fitness is one of your values, then this will be imprinted in everything you do. You will behave in a way as to ensure you are healthy and fit, as you will not accept your life any other way.

When you set goals that reflect these, you’ll  want to start taking action right now, never mind waiting until the new year!

2/ If your goals are long term, it is useful to break them down into smaller more attainable mini objectives, so you can realise your progress more easily, and get a sense of accomplishment that will in turn keep you motivated and focused.

If you have a few goals in different areas in life, avoid overload and overwhelm by prioritising and concentrating on those goals that are most important to you right now.

3/ Tell people about your resolutions. Studies show that people who have a supporting family and friends reach their objectives faster , and also live happier and longer lives! This is why support groups of all sorts have proven to be so popular and successful.

If your family and friends are not as supporting as you’d like them to be, finding like-minded people who share the same or similar goals will help you get what you want faster and more easily. And you’ll get to enjoy the process more too.

4/ We are creatures of habit and often get stuck in  particular behaviours that can seem impossible to break, unless you know how to.

In order to build new effortless and lasting habits, you need to crush limiting beliefs, create new more resourceful ones, and attach these to your goals, together with  a bucket load of emotion  and some super effective goal setting tools.

Thinking that you will be able to do this relying solely on will power is a big mistake that will only bring you frustration and disappointment.

Even the most successful entrepreneurs, artist and athletes have coaches, like me, to help them with the necessary mind skills to help them achieve their goals.

If you want to find out what these mind skills are, and the 7 essential steps you need to follow in order to achieve your goals this year, stay tuned for my upcoming coaching programme “7 steps to getting what you want”, out in January!
